Hi' everybody
Sorry to be so insistent... this group is the only help i've got when i
don't know something... and is very difficult to find info in internet
related to this things with magic. Ive got no other place to ask :(

Like Omar said i can do the relinking part one by one... But is not so good
when having multiple programs...
I also thought, maybe by exporting the program and editing something in the
txt, i can accomplish my goal... I didn't try it yet.

Answering Steve question... i've got magic 9.4sp4
The variable is not based on a model... is directly linked to the library

Thanks a lot for your time.

Please answer two questions:

1) What version and service pack level of eDeveloper?

2) Is the virtual variable based on a Model that references the OLE
object or does the virtual variable reference the OLE object directly?

From: "Andy Jerison" <ajerison@...>

Tom,

Here's the skinny on US daylight savings time:

Nearly all of Indiana is in the Eastern time zone, GMT-5. The southwestern
and northwestern parts of the state are in the Central time zone, GMT-6. The
part of Indiana that's in the Eastern time zone doesn't use daylight savings
time.

Arizona is even more fun. The entire state is in the Mountain time zone,
GMT-7. The state in general doesn't use daylight time. The Navajo and Hopi
Indian reservations (an area larger than the New England states combined!),
which occupy about one-sixth of the state in the northeast corner, follow
their own rules; the Navajo reservation does use daylight time, while the
Hopi reservation, entirely surrounded by Navajo country, doesn't.

So, it you have clients in those areas, you really need to know the time
zone that each client occupies.

Andy Jerison

Hello Group.

A client of mine is requesting that our system calculate
daylight savings
adjustments. This is needed for a payroll interface.
i.e. On the 2nd of April, 2000. Daylight Savings Time
starts at 2:00AM is
most US states. Therefore, my client wants us to adjust the total hours
worked of an employee, so that it reflects daylight savings.

At this point I'm considering writing a DLL to find out the
current time
adjustment. If any of you have experience with this problem, your input
would be appreciated.
Well, the whole DST thing (and timezones, for that matter), are a bit more
complicated that they initially seem.

The rules for DST are supposedly laid out in United States Code Title 15
Chapter 6 SubChapter 9.

<http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/ch6.html>

"The states" shall do this, and the "The states" shall do that, and then
the very last paragraph defines "states":

"As used in this Act, the term ''State'' includes the District of
Columbia,
the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any possession of the United States."

So, the rules laid down don't even apply to the 50 entities that we
recognize as States!! Anyway, my understanding is that Arizona doesn't
participate, and I KNOW from personal experience that a small part (the
southern tip) of Indiana doesn't participate in DST. Other than that, the
general rule is that is starts on the first Sunday in April and
ends on the
last Sunday of October. (In the U.S.)

Hope this helps. ;) Have fun!

One other thing. I don't know squat about Oracle, but I was under the
impression that the data/time fields were actually stored in CUT
(Coordinated Universal Time, a.k.a. GMT and/or ZULU), with a time zone
difference indicator as part of the value. If this is true, and
if the O/S
handles the DST change properly, your problem may not exist.
Date/Time End
minus Date/Time Start will correctly return the hours worked.

Sat, 01 Apr 2000 23:00:00 -0500 minus Sun, 02 Apr 2000 07:00:00
-0400 = 7

Sorry,
I did not read the message well!

Try opening the header form and reducing the width
with the mouse or <shift>+<left arrow>

Magic will not reduce a form to a size which could not
hold all the controls on the form.

It may be that Magic won't reduce the size because it thinks the form is a
control.
I never thought of it this way but it could be.

By reducing the size with the above method this should not be a problem.

We have a need to run multiple instances of a Magic application and each
instance would run the same ctl but would have a different application name.
Unfortunately the application name apparently has to be hardcoded in the
programs system name. We've tried to use a logical name, but this hasn't
worked. Our only option appears to be to export, duplicate the export
several times and then edit the file to change the Magic System names in the
programs to what we want. Has anyone been able to make this setting dynamic?

Thx, Roy

The problem is, the table locked when one client is trying to open it
while server is using, another situation, the table locked when server is
trying to open it while two client is in use.

We have tried to solve it like, changing the config.sys and the settings
of magic in maximum files handles and terminal handles, but still does not

Hello, Group:

Magic 8.01 on local, notebook computer.

I'm working on an app that someone else set up. Any time that I make a
change to the Files Repository, I get the following message:

"Due to Change table in Toolkit Option, physical tables are not
changed"

... and no file convert is run.

Each table is (for the most part) attached to its own database. The
settings / databases table shows the location for each database as a
Logical Name (the same one, pointing to the directory where these files
should reside at this time).

If anyone has a simple answer for this, I would appreciate it!

For one that works now but costs you money, try Open Sesame Systems in Toronto or Montreal (Contact Don Ferguson or Moe Nawaz in
Toronto at donf@... or -- oops -- can't find Moe's email) or contact Craig Martin who is in the final stages of
building similar DLL at craig_martin@.... Craig also has a great multi-purpose DLL called Hot Fudge that you may like to
check into at http://www.craigmartin.com

Reponse to problem #2: When you install Magic, after you've entered YOUR
LICENSE DATA, you must reboot for the new license data to "take effect".
Give it another shot!

Subject: [magicu-l] V8.01a installation problems

From: "Brian Scoffield" <brianscoffield@...>

I attempted 2 separate installations this past week. Simple single
workstation installations from the Magic CD.

1. V8.01a Deployment on Win95. I did a straight, accept all defaults,
installation and I got the problem initializing the license
database. I resolved that by moving the WBtrcall.dll files to the
appropriate
directories... 51K dll was already in the license directory so I moved the
42k
dll from windows\system to the magic\deployment directory. I was then able
to proceed....

2. V8.01 Deployment on Win98. I did exactly the same thing on a win98
machine(at a different client, so the two installations are not related in
any
way) and was able to launch the License manager and add my license data
and complete that task without a problem. I did not have to shuffle the
dlls!!!
However, when I tried to then launch Magic I got a "License Error - unable
to
access license data". Those may not be the exact words, but this was not
the DB initialization error of the previous install.
I tried the dll shuffle to no avail. I installed on another workstation and
did
not enter my license info but simply tried to launch Magic expecting to see
the demo application. No way past the license error. (additional inf. both
these machines access a V5.7 version of Magic from an NT server..
conflicts??) Reboots were tried as well...

First, why would the two results be different?

Second, what can I do about the second situation? I hope it is something
simple and I was just too tired to see it, but a simple install from the cd
should probably work!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Re: Magic for Windows and Btrieve reliability - is any body really happy?

Bret Wiener <bret@...>

I'm a little unsure about something...does MSE support Magic with Btrieve 7?
I thought Btrieve 7 was still an "unknown" and therefore MSE won't support
it. We have 2 servers in-house...one with Btrieve 6.15.451 and the other
with Pervasive.SQL (Btrieve 7). The one with Btrieve 7 doesn't seem to be
any faster, and it gives us a ton of problems...frequent Fatal Error 46's
are the worst, and I've tested after hours with programs which I KNOW should
not cause a 46. I still prefer 6.15.

Back in the old days (through Magic 5), the combination of Magic and
Btrieve was "rock-solid" - When something didn't work, it was because
of something I did wrong - virtually without exception.

Recently, however, I'm seeing an increasing number of
significant problems on the maillist related to the combination of
Magic 7-8/Btrieve 6.15/7 on multiuser systems. Some of the issues
relate to speed, others to record and file locking. I have the
uncomfortable feeling that many of the issues raised are not curable
by "tuning", but are the result of design problems in Magic or Btrieve
(or both).

Clearly the correspondence here is heavily weighted toward solving
problems, and in that context I'd be interested in hearing about
"success stories" - that is, large multiuser systems which work
quickly and reliably - and how you got them to function that way.

Thanks in advance.

MSE does not currently support Btrieve 7. However, we have been using it in
house since it's release without any major problems. The only issue that we
have with it we would also have if we were using 6.15. That is Magic's use
of the Btrieve extended operations. We jumped from 6.10 to 7.0.

We have had great success using Magic 5.7 and Btrieve. However, the same
cannot be said for Magic 8.0 and Btrieve.

Ah, who needs a marketing department when I have
Ian and the mail list... :-)

Sorry, my 'holiday' got in the way but the elves are
now busy cooking up some new Fudge goodies
just in time for Xmas. It may even include what you say.

You're beginning to make all this Hot Fudge stuff
seem like a Microsoft product, Ian :-)
(ie. pre-announced by several years).
Apart from the fact I have less money and less bugs than
Microsoft that is.

Maybe Mr. Eric Gagne wants to post his forthcoming

happening with Magic dll-madness unleashed
on an unsuspecting universe.
