Hi Hayim,

I have the same problem with 8.01. I'm not sure about this but I think
that all users (including you) must use the same lock file if you want to do
that.

I can't help you with condensed printing, sorry.

And Yes, there is a btrieve 7 workstation engine. It's about 50.00$ us.
I bought it last week and it's great.

Re: Licence manager

Eric Gagné <ericg@...

Hi Greg,

My solution to this problem was to enable the autologin feature in NT.
I extracted these instructions from microsoft's support site.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

Windows NT allows you to automate the logon process by storing your
password and other pertinent information in the Registry database.

NOTE: This feature allows other users to start your computer and use
the account you establish to automatically logon. Also, timing conflicts can
occur. For example: If you have several network transports loaded, enabling
automatic logon may make Windows NT attempt to connect to network resources
before the network transports are completely loaded.

Use the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to add your logon information,
as follows:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct
them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

1.. Start REGEDT32.EXE and locate the following Registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

2.. Establish your domain name, account name, and password, using
the values you would normally type when logging on. You should assign the
following values:

DefaultDomainName
DefaultUserName
DefaultPassword

NOTE: The DefaultPassword value may not exist. If it doesn't, from
the Edit menu, choose Add Value. In the Value Name field, type:
"DefaultPassword" (without the quotation marks). Select REG_SZ for the Data
Type. In the String field, type your password. Save your changes.

Also, if no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows NT
automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0
(false), thus disabling the AutoAdminLogon feature.

3.. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value. Enter AutoAdminLogon in
the Value Name field. Select REG_SZ for the Data Type. Enter 1 in the String
field. Save your changes.

4.. Exit REGEDT32.

5.. Exit Windows NT and turn off your computer.

6.. Restart your computer and Windows NT. You should be able to
logon automatically.

NOTE: To bypass the AutoAdminLogon process, and to logon on as a
different user, hold down the SHIFT key after a logoff or after a Windows NT
restart.

Hi Group,

Has someone any idea how to avoid the error message from Btrieve number 22.
Im working with Btrieve Server and I know that is something about the Size
Buffer.

Thank in advance
Miguel,

Error 22 can mean a couple of different things. In general, when you make
a call to Btrieve to fetch a record, one of the arguments passed is the
size of the buffer that your program has established to receive the record.
If a Get Equal (for example) is to fetch a 1000-byte record, and your
program passes the value 500 in the Data Buffer Length argument, Btrieve
returns the first 500 bytes of the record AND an error 22 in the status.
This is but one example - there are other ops that can result in error 22.

When it comes to Magic, all of this buffer stuff gets handled by the
Btrieve Gateway. Further, in my experience, the Btrieve Gateway is usually
pretty good at selecting an appropriate size for its data buffer. Assuming
that you are receiving this error in Magic, I suggest you check these three
things first:

1) Does the file definition in Magic's File Dictionary match the actual
data file? If Magic "thinks" that the record length is 500 bytes the
gateway will construct its data buffer accordingly. But if the actual
record length is more than that (and you have Check Definition = No) it is
possible to receive error 22 when Magic attempts to read/write a record.
This would likely manifest itself on each and every attempt to read from or
write to this file.

2) Does the file use variable length records? In Btrieve, variable length
records are used to store records containing Memo or BLOB fields. If the
record contains a Memo field, check the size of the Memo field specified in
Magic's File Dictionary. Is it large enough to accomodate the largest memo
actually stored in the file?

3) If that's okay, then I suggest you rebuild the file and see if this
doesn't solve your problem. Error 22 can also be returned if a file uses
variable length records and is corrupted. 2) and 3) could manifest
themselves intermittently, only when attempting to access the record or
records containing an "oversized" memo, or involved in the corruption.

Client/ Server v8.01a Forms/ Tab Boxes

"Greg Sier" <gregsier@...

Have encountered a naughty little bug that if a field is linked to a tab,
when you range on it, it may not find any records where records exist. What
is even more nasty about this is that it appears inconsistent.

It was first encountered in a program that was used for training operators,
and we went through the range scenario 100+ times during the exercise. No
problems. 4 weeks on, it consistently refuses to work. The program hadnt
been touched since the training. You can correct it if you unlink the field
from the tab, but as soon as the field is relinked, the range fails. Other
tabs seem to work OK.

Reminds me of that persistent bug in v7 when you generate a table in a form
as part of a report. At times, certain fields appear to get the wrong z
order and disappear behind the table. The only thing that brings them back
is a slight movement of the entire table and fields, so you really need to
run the report each time you enter the forms screen.

Sorry guys but cant help feeling that there is something flaky in the forms
area.

Dear group,

I have a problem with my reports in Magic 8.02 concerning the
Printer Orientation.

In Magic 7 we have a global program which sets the PrinterOrientation
in the Magic configuration file to set the printer to portrait or

This doesn't work in Magic 8.02.

Does anyone know if 8.02 still supports this as it doesn't appear in the
configuration file and even after adding it to the configuration file it
still
doesn't work.

Re: Btrieve server optimization

Geoff Greig <geoffg@...>

Tom,

Just one point about testing performance of Batch tasks. Depending on the number of records you are processing, often you can get
a much faster run the second time you run your program without changing anything at all. This is because of disk cashe.

For accurate performance testing cashe should be flushed before the test.

Shuting down the client will do this on the client. Don't no how to do this on a running server?

Hi to all

We are testing our Magic 7.1d application with Btrieve server 6.15 on
Novell 4.11 for the first time and we are pretty much dissapointed about
speed.

We have a 10 mb application located on novell server.
Btrieve server settings are:
BTRIEVE -p=4096 -f=128 -h=150 -l=20 -t=15 -u=0 -s=30 -m=4096(we tried more
with no result)
BSPXCOM d-=8192 -s=15 -w=3 -r=1500

Btrieve local settings are as recomended by MSE:
operation bundle limit =25
initiation time limit = 100
disk i/o wait limit = 100

when we change from local engine to requester it runs slightly faster
1.2 to 2 times faster.
I've heard that it should ran 10 times faster.
I think that "10 times faster" thing is referring to P.SQL, the newer
version of Btrieve.

Particular program within application is opening about 30 to 35 files
simultaneously and working very hard with them. All files are opened
exclusively.
In BT6.15, the file open mode of WRITE/NONE/FAST might be a better
performer than WRITE/NONE/NORMAL, but you must be aware of the danger.
FAST mode doesn't use any pre-imaging and, IF there is a hardware problem,
there is a MUCH GREATER chance of data corruption.

I will appreciate any help from magic group.
Well, there are so many possibilities here, it's hard to know where to begin.

Btrieve isn't the fastest data engine, but it does quite well. Magic,
being a highly optimized C++ engine can be VERY fast. There are certainly
many external factors to look at also.

What kind of server (O/S and hardware) is the btrieve server running on?
(I know that YOU are on Novell, but this is for the group). On NT, if you
don't have a good amount of memory, you will have NT doing a lot of
"swapping" of RAM to Virtual Memory - which will REALLY be hurting the
performance.

What kind of network are you running on? If you are sharing a 10base-T
(10Mbit) LAN segment with 25 other users, you might be running into a lot
of "collisions" which are slowing things down quite a bit. Novell
certainly allows you to add multiple networks to the server. It really
isn't too expensive to add a new 100 Mbit ethernet card to the server and
to a GOOD workstation that is going to run this batch process, and run a
cable directly between the server and that workstation.

Now, to get more into what you are probably asking about:

P.SQL is being promoted as being 10-50 time faster than prior versions. If
you have a really substantial application, however, you are going to want
to carefully test it if you move up to P.SQL. I think that one of the ways
they have gained speed in is in doing "page locking" rather than "record
locking", and this "feature" might cause problems for you.

In Magic, the two greatest things (IMHO) that will speed up a batch
application has to do with "When are the files opened" and "Screen I/O".

*************************************************

File Opens: Each task has a "DB Tables" repository, which can be accessed
with "Ctrl-D", or from the menu "Task / DB Tables". Here is the scenario
for a GREAT performance enhancement.

Task 1 is a batch task that has opened File 1, which contains 1,000 records.

For each record, Task 1 (in record suffix) calls Task 2 (EITHER another
program OR a subtask) which opens File 2, ranges on a record, and does an
update.

By default, each time Magic calls task 2, it will instruct Btrieve to
OPEN FILE
GET A RECORD
UPDATE A RECORD
CLOSE FILE

If you go back to task 1 and get into the "DB Tables" repository, you can
add a line and specify that task 1 SHOULD OPEN file 2 when it loads. In
our example of 1,000 records, this will save you 1,000 "OPEN" and "CLOSE"
processes on the btrieve server. Just imagine if Task 2 opens 5 or 10
files! This ONE method will enhance a batch process many times over.

********************************************

SCREEN I/O: Most of us really want to see something going on while the
computer is working. It is quite typical for people to display records in
a table while processing a batch, but this REALLY KILLS performance. Here
is a simple experiment. Take an existing large file (10K+ records), and do
an export with APG. Then use APG to create an import program -- which will
create a table to display the incoming records. Erase the file, and do the
import with a stopwatch. Then, in the import program, go to "Task Control
/ Behavior" and set "Open Task Window" to NO. Erase the file, and to the
import again with a stopwatch. My experience has been about 400% increase
in performance.

IF you just HAVE to see something moving (like me!!!), I would suggest
displaying a virtual field, and in record suffix you can update that
virtual field with counter(0) based on the condition "counter(0) MOD 1000 =
0". This will do only 1 screen I/O per thousand records, and doesn't
impact much on the performance.

************************************************

One last thing -- if you are creating a lot of records in a file, you might
save some time by opening the file (from "DB Tables" repository) in
"Reindex" mode. This really depends on the situation. If you are adding
100K records to a work file that will only contain the 100K records, this
is definitely faster (15%?). If you are adding 100K records to a history
file that already contains 1,000K records, reindexing will probably take
longer.

************************************************

And yet one last thing, for those of you with NT servers, you might gain a
LOT of performance for a large batch process by running it on the NT
server. I think that there is a patch available that will let you install
a Magic runtime on the NT server.

Hope this has been helpful...

Tom Martin

Re: Export Import

Geoff Greig <geoffg@...>

Robert,

You can open dynamically open a databse file based on an expression.

It is entered in the DB Names table, in the Exp Column.

Also the easyest way to import one application into another in to use the Magic Undocumented Internal Seral Number facility. This
has been in Magic since the very early versions but is not supported by MSE. So use it on the understanding that it is
unsupported. Just like Tab cards in V6.

If you place:

EnableChangeIsn = Y

anywere in the [MAGIC_ENV] section of in the MAGIC.INI file then Magic's Internal serial number will be implemented the next time
Magic is started.

It can then be viewed in the Program dictionary and set in the CTL Properties. It is then possible to export all or part of a Magic
application with the Magic Internal serial Number.

Providing the Internal Serial Numbers are set correctly it is possible to merger 2 applications together any way you want. But
with all merging of applications care should be taken.

So unless you know the application that the exported file will be imported into you cannot do this.
Seems pretty dumb ?
I suppose this gets back to the prob where you cannot dynamicly open a database based on an expression.

From: "Dieter Fallgatter" <dieter@...>

Could someone please refresh my memory on this subject. I vaguely remember
that a few weeks or months back I read some messages that dealt with this
problem.

I have an existing Magic application (Btrieve tables) that uses Logicals as
part of its keys. When I try to convert a table to MS SQL, I get the
message
"invalid segment". The Storage Type for the logical is set to Integer
Logical. When I change the Storage Type to String Logical it works fine.
What I don't like about this situation is that in the SQL database the data
is stored as Binary instead of Bit (0x46 = false, 0x54 = true). The
customer
wants to access the data with other tools than Magic. Therefore we have to
store some meaningful values in these fields.

What can I do to have Logicals as part of my keys AND a meaningful data
storage (0/1)?

Thanks for your help.
