Fatal error 2

I can think of two reasons: 1. You created a file on the network (through brequest) with Btrieve 6.x and now you are trying to read it in a local hard drive (or without brequest loaded; btrieve.exe only) with 5.x. In this case the file is probably not damaged, but the problem is that the file was created in 6.x format and Btrieve 5 believes it is damaged. If you need to use it in a local drive you must create it theough btrieve.exe (do it in the local drive or without brequest loaded) and then populate it -beware only that format 6.x accepts 119 key segments and format 5.x accepts only 24. Otherwise they are kind of equivalent. 2. Your file is damaged. Utilities as BUTIL -STAT and BTUTIL -STAT only read the file header record, and they cannot be conclusive about the health of the file, _unless_ you -DUMP or -RECOVER all records to text (there are still some key damages that don't always show up by doing this). In our Magic-applications we get every now and then an error 2. When I check the files that are used by the application with BTUTIL most of the time there seems nothing wrong. So I wondered what could be other reasons for an error 2 except a damaged file.... Anyone an idea? Oh yes, we are talking about Magic 5.60c on an Novell 4.11 server with Btrieve 6.10. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Rob. |

This condition causes Btrieve to report an Error 2 when, in fact, the file ITSELF is okay. This is a known issue (to Novell <g>) so you should be able to search their website for more information on "TurboFAT". Further, I believe that there is a patch out there to fix this problem. Until then, there are a couple of things you can do: When you receive this error, you can clear it out by doing a simple DOS copy of the file. This seems to kick NetWare in the pants enough to re-sync its tables. Alternatively, I think you can disable TurboFAT, but in the long run, you should get the patch. Rob,
It's quite possible that you have a "turbo fat" error which results from an incompatibility between novell 4.1x and btrieve 6.1 I'll send the patch information to you (and to anybody else who wants it.) My copy is a bit old, and you might want to re-check the Novell web site before applying it.
