Petition for 64bit C/S

Steven Burrows

When I recently pestered MSE about 64bit for XPA Client/Server, I got a better answer than previously. Was told that MSE could and would do it at some point, but it would be a switch to 64bit ONLY so they were waiting until nobody needed a 32bit client. For us, that point passed a few years ago. I don’t need 64bit for the extra memory or performance in XPA, I need it so :

  1. I can connect to 64bit apps (everything) properly.
  2. I don’t have to force my users to install 32bit Office where they then suffer quite severely in the Excel department (its not as easy as it used to be to install different bits of Office in 32/64 if it is possible at all).
  3. I am fed up with having the conversation that makes us look like dinosaurs.

I understand that people may be currently running the odd 32bit spud in a few places on existing software, but for a NEW version of XPA, is there anyone who would actually NEED 32bit ?

Come on, hands up ! (so I can send the boyz round)

Here’s an idea I haven’t tested: since 4.9 has a  64bit runtime engine that’s limited to background operations only, can you orchestrate that to interact where necessary?

Also, you know some kind of integration work is far easier in other tools like python. Excel is a great example. I also know you’re scowling at me right now. Try the magic runtime background 64bit engine. 😎
